Lastly...Jake's Surgery
Lastly, just wanted to let you all know in case you don't already, that Jake is having surgery tomorrow to have tubes put in his ears. He has been battling with really nasty (antibiotic-resistant), chronic ear infections since August, so we are ready for this! They make a small incision in the ear drum & slip a little flanged tube in the hole, which stays in his ear until it falls out on its own in 6-12 months. The tube allows air to pass through his ear so that fluid behind his ear drum can dry up & isn't just hanging out there, harboring bacteria. It's not uncommon for babies to have this issue, because their Eustachian tubes are so small, so the ear can't ventilate on its own like an adult ear can. The surgery itself takes about 3 minutes for the doctor to perform, but it takes a little longer to get Jake properly sedated & then to allow him to come back out of sedation. It is an outpatient surgery that requires only laughing gas - Jake will be sleeping while they do it. So, please say a little prayer for Jake that the surgery will go smoothly, he will recover quickly, and will respond well to the tubes in the coming days & months. We are hopeful that this will really help his health! We'll let you all know how it goes.
